Psychotherapist Mastin Kipp says it best, every hero needs a mentor.
Batman had Ra’s Al Ghul. Luke Skywalker had Obi-Wan. Wonder Woman had Hippolyta.
Like a big sister (or brother) who taught you how to ride a bike when you were young. They’re there to show you how, help you get your balance on the bike, and once you can do it yourself, they let you go, free to ride on your own.
The same goes with your life and healing journey. A mentor is someone who can share the ‘know-how’ of life and healing. They usually have experienced adversities themselves. They’ve been there, done that, and survived it. They can give you the knowledge, the tools, the support, that you need to begin your super hero journey and sustain it. They show you it’s possible to transform.
Then you become your own hero. Because you are the one who will be eating the leafy green vegetables. You’re the one who will be moving everyday. You’re the one who will be doing all them lovely bedtime routines so you can get the sleep you need each night. You’re the one who will work on getting your body back to parasympathetic mode (calm state), when your mind starts to freak out and become anxious. You’re the one who needs to be able to say ‘no’ to things that don’t do you good. You are your own hero.
Don’t be afraid (or ashamed) to ask for help. No, it’s not a sign of weakness, as a matter of fact you’re being super brave for wanting to change your life for the better. You don’t need to go through the darkness alone. It’s ok to get help.
As a coach myself, I have had (and still have) plenty of mentors and coaches throughout my own healing journey. And no they don’t come in the form of just coaches, therapists or health practitioners. I found my mentors in my husband, my friends, my family and so many others that are in my path.
